Active Clay
represents the amount of swelling clay within the Green Sand
-
•%
Carbon (Carbonaceous) Material represents the amount of
combustible material in the Green Sand.
-

Metallics represents the amount of metal that has been
incorporated into the Green Sand.
-

Silica represents the proportion of quartz sand in the
Green Sand.
-
•%
Fluxing Material represents the non-active material in
the sand. This
material is typically not refractory and it also adds
undesired surface area to the Green Sand.

Inert Fines: < 53 micron sized particles such as
silt, dead clay, ash and other indistinguishable fine
material.
-
–%
Oolitics: coatings of dead clay and ash on the sand
grains. Presence
of this material will affect the ability of the clay to bond
to the sand grain.

•%Cleanliness
Factor is based upon the percentage of quartz sand
compared to the amount of Fluxing Material and Metallics in
the Green Sand. Recommended values for iron and non-ferrous
Green Sands are 83 to 93%.
A value of 90% or greater is recommended for Green
Sand used in Steel Foundries.
